Medical Mission in Kenya

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” The collective contribution of the six participants in the Wings of Hope Maasai & Safari Adventure in Kenya from June 17-30 affirms Margaret Mead’s quote on the power of a small group of people to make a significant change for the good.

Wings of Hope President David Weeks and Executive Director Summer Slevin guided Dr. Patty Potter, a psychiatrist from Massachusetts, Ms. Efia Dalili, a Dulla from Maryland, Ms. Heather Bowen, a physical therapist from California and Dr. Owatayo Awotunde, a pharmacist from Maryland. Working with eleven medical personnel from the Narok Health Department, the Wings of Hope participants supported the health care needs of the 200+ Maasai people, who attended each of the two days of the health fair. Additionally, this team recognized the urgent need to improve the quality of maternal care in the Osiligi Medical Dispensary and financed the following needs: Running water was extended from the Dispensary tank to a newly installed toilet, shower and sink. A second delivery bed along with two recovery beds, a nebulizer and an autoclave container to sterilize dental and obstetric instruments were purchased. To support the newborns, two heaters and an infant measurement scale were also bought. These additions to the Osiligi Medical Dispensary for maternal care have and will continue to make a significant positive difference for Maasai women seeking maternal care. The collective contribution of this team was truly amazing and deeply appreciated by the Maasai community.
