Osiligi Maternal Hospital
Kenya Current Update
Wings of Hope donors have significantly improved the quality of health care for the Maasai in Kenya with purchases of an autoclave to sterilize obstetric and dental instruments, an incinerator to manage the medical waste from the Osiligi Medical Dispensary and funds to support the materials needed in the construction of a small cottage for the OBGYN doctor to remain on site to provide 24/7 medical support for maternal care. The local Maasai community will partner with Wings of Hope in providing the cost of the labor associated with the construction of this residence.
This project is a great example of Wings of Hope working with and not for the local people in need. Two initiatives have begun to improve the quality of education for Maasai children in the Punyua Primary School in Kenya and the health, education and economy of the Ditinn villagers in Guinea. Thanks to a generous donation of 26 laptops, Wings of Hope has sent them by air from California to Maryland and shipped them to Kenya with the help of a partnership established with the NGO Kenya Connects. This NGO will also assist Wings of Hope in making sure that the Primary School children and their teachers have the necessary training and infrastructural network support.

Why a Maternal Hospital?
Rain soaked, three Maasai women of the Punyua clan patiently wait to see Joel, the attending nurse of the small 40’ X 60’ Osiligi Medical Dispensary in the rural region of the Narok District in Kenya. Needing medical attention, these pregnant women have either arrived by motor bike over the uneven dirt road riddled with swollen potholes or have walked through the rain to the Dispensary. They are among the more than 1000 patients a month in 2024 who have sought consultation and/or treatment. In 2023, Joel and his assistant helped 100 women give birth to their babies.
Unfortunately that year, 77 pregnant women could not give birth at the Dispensary due to complications. They had to be referred to the Narok city hospital, located approximately two hours drive depending on the road conditions from the Dispensary. Fortunately, as of April 2024, the Osiligi Medical Dispensary has a truck/ambulance, to transport women with birthing complications to the Narok Hospital. This life threatening alternative for expectant mothers and their babies can be remedied with the nearby construction of a maternal hospital.

The Wings of Hope Global Cooperative Inc. has partnered with the Narok Government to build the Osiligi Maternal Hospital adjacent to the Osiligi Medical Dispensary. The estimated construction cost of $800,000.00 will be equally shared by the partners and detailed floor plans have been developed by a team from the Build Health International nonprofit dedicated to global health equity. This team will work closely with David Weeks, President of Wings of Hope Global Cooperative in developing a virtual tour of the proposed maternal hospital to appeal to prospective donors. This two- floor medical facility will feature on the ground floor well equipped pre / post and operating rooms to accommodate cesarian and other complicated birthing procedures.
Additionally, there will be a NICU room with incubators for premature babies and residential rooms for women needing overnight recovery after giving birth. On the first floor there will be staff accommodations and a guest apartment for visiting professsionals. The Osiligi Maternal Hospital will be a great complement to the Osiligi Medical Dispensary and the Osiligi Medical Complex that houses a pharmacy with dentist and vision offices and is sustained by the Narok Health Department. The health needs of potentially 20,000 Maasai in this rural region of Kenya will be well served and the Osiligi Maternal Hospital will be a beacon of global health equity.
Welcome to a view of the Osiligi Maternity Hospital in the Narok region of Kenya.
As you join this virtual interior view, you will enter through the front entrance. To your right will be a receptionist who will greet you and direct you to where your needs can be met. Walking down the hall past the operating room on the left, you will turn to the right, pass in-front of a staircase to the second residential floor and enter an atrium, where women in labor can walk and spend time with loved ones prior to delivery. A wall sculpture of an Acacia tree will showcase the names of donors, who contributed to the Hospital.
As you depart the atrium, you will go around to the back of the staircase and enter another door that will lead to a covered corridor by the atrium. Then you will enter the maternity ward, where there are five beds separated by pull curtains for privacy. Three of them will be for women in labor and two will be for mothers recovering from delivery.
As you depart from the maternity ward, you will have a view of the atrium on the right. On the second floor there will be dorm rooms for the staff, a dining room and kitchen as well as apartments for visiting physicians or health care officials.
Next you will pass through the neonatal intensive care unit and then proceed through the atrium to view the operating room. Then you will return to the hallway and will be directed to a view of the reception desk and the adjacent hallway that will have the pharmacy and lab as well as the examination rooms for incoming patients before exiting the front door.
